Hafnium is a rare metal with the atomic number 72. It is found in zirconium ores, but only in very small quantities, at an approximate ratio of one part hafnium to 50 parts zirconium. In addition to its low concentration, hafnium has chemical properties that are very similar to those of zirconium, making it technically difficult to separate the two elements at high purity.
